About
Fully funded 11-week residency in London for an early-career visual artist based in Aotearoa New Zealand, running September–December 2026.
Applications are open for an early-career visual artist based in Aotearoa New Zealand to undertake an eleven-week, fully funded residency at Gasworks in London from 30 September to 15 December 2026.
Gasworks is a leading non-profit arts organisation in south London, working at the intersection of UK and international contemporary art. Since 1994, they have supported more than 600 artists from over 80 countries. Their residencies are self-led, non-prescriptive and process-based — focused on giving artists the space and support to research and develop new work, engage with London, and build international networks.
What the selected artist receives:
- 24/7 access to a fully accessible private studio at Gasworks
- Single room in Gasworks' shared Residency House with other resident artists
- Economy return flights and taxi transfers from Aotearoa New Zealand to London, including cabin and hold luggage
- All visa costs and application support
- A weekly stipend of £175 for living expenses
- A materials budget of up to £800
- A prepaid TfL travel card (zones 1–2) for unlimited travel throughout the residency
- Studio visits with Gasworks staff, external curators, artists, and educational groups
- Participation in an Open Studios event on Saturday 5 December 2026
- A dedicated residency page on the Gasworks website, including a filmed interview
- At least two individual studio visits with artists, curators, and arts professionals
- Administrative, pastoral, and curatorial support from Gasworks staff (Monday–Friday, 10am–6pm)
Eligibility:
The open call is for early-career contemporary visual artists based in Aotearoa New Zealand only. Priority is given to artists making high quality work who have not previously had the opportunity to work in London. Gasworks encourages applications from artists of all backgrounds. The building is fully accessible and accessible accommodation can be arranged if required.
Please note: due to limited facilities, residencies are for individual artists only. Artistic duos, collectives, partners, and children cannot be accommodated in the Residency House, though artists wishing to spend time in London with family may still apply if they arrange their own travel and accommodation separately.
How to apply:
Applications are digital only, submitted via the online form on the Gasworks website. Your application should be submitted as a single PDF (max 15MB) and include:
1. A cover sheet with your name, address, email, phone, and social media/website links
2. A 250-word statement on your artistic practice
3. A 250-word statement on your plans for the residency
4. Up to 15 images or video/sound clips of recent work with captions
5. A CV/resume (maximum 3 pages)
6. Any relevant supporting documentation (articles, publications, etc.)
Spoken responses for items 2 and 3 are welcome as audio or video file links within the PDF.
Timeline:
- Applications close: 1 June 2026, 1pm UK time
- Online interviews with shortlisted candidates: week of 22 June 2026
- Successful applicant notified: week of 6 July 2026
