About

Submit your work to the Toyooka Theater Festival Fringe in Japan. Transform unconventional spaces into stages and receive up to 500,000 JPY in subsidy.

The Toyooka Theater Festival Fringe invites international artists of all genres—including theater, dance, music, visual arts, circus, cabaret, and variety performances—to transform unconventional spaces into stages. Because Toyooka has few conventional theatres, many performances take place in unique locations such as shrines, churches, cinemas, vacant houses, university classrooms, community centers, campsites, and beaches. Even a small community stage or a sandy beach overlooking the sea can become a theatre if artists imagine it as one. Benefits of Participation: Coordination Support: The festival coordinator will provide support for exploring site-specific possibilities, matching works with suitable venues, research related to the creation of the work, and local community matters. Production Subsidy: Selected artists/companies will receive a production subsidy of up to 500,000 JPY (approx. $5,400 NZD) for a "Performance" or up to 100,000 JPY (approx. $1,080 NZD) for a "Residency". Festival Dates: September 18–27, 2026 Important Milestones: Deadline: April 1, 2026 (9:00 AM JST). First Round Results (Document Screening): Notification via email by mid-April 2026. Second Round (Online Interview): From mid-April 2026 onward. Final Selection Results: Mid-May 2026. Post-Selection Process: Individual coordination with the festival staff will be conducted mostly online, with participating artists publicly announced around mid-June.
