About

A 13-week artist residency in a historic Oamaru foundry offering studio space, accommodation, a stipend, and technical support to cast works in iron.

The 2026 Crucible Artist Residency, supported by the Hynds Foundation and Gillies Metaltech, offers artists the experience of making in a long-established and well-equipped foundry located in the Historic Precinct of Oamaru. The purpose of the residency is to enable artists to spend studio time working alongside trained foundry technicians to develop new work, specifically casting elements in iron using the sand-casting technique. What's Provided: Stipend: $650 gross per week paid fortnightly for the 13-week duration (August 24 – November 22, 2026). Materials Allowance: $5000 per artist for materials and technical support (including exhibition setup). Accommodation: Provided locally for the duration of the residency. Workspace: A dedicated studio space within the Crucible Art Studios, plus access to a shared studio. Exhibition: A showcase of created works will be held during the Victorian Weekend celebrations (November 12-15, 2026). Artist Responsibilities: Artists must provide their own steel-capped boots and a respirator for use during foundry processes. Transport costs and the freight/removal of work are the sole responsibility of the artist. The artist is responsible for managing their own tax obligations on the stipend. How to Apply: Submit your application digitally as a single PDF to crucible@gilliesmetaltech.co.nz with the subject line "[Insert Your Name] - Crucible Application". The PDF must include: A biography (up to 500 words). A CV outlining art qualifications, exhibitions, and creative highlights. One Letter of Reference (must include the referee's email and phone contact). 4 Examples of work (up to 10 digital images, one per page).
