About
Produce a small edition photographic artist’s book at the Penumbra Foundation's Risograph facilities in New York City.
The Penumbra Foundation Risograph Residency provides the opportunity for artists to propose a photographic project to produce in print form at our Risograph facilities in New York City. It is particularly well suited to the production of small edition photographic artist’s books. Residency Benefits & Timeline: Residents are allotted roughly one month to produce their projects ("Press Time") in June, July, or August of 2026. A budget allocated to the production of the proposed project to cover the costs of ink, paper, and binding. Resources, assistance, and time to produce a small edition risograph project. A review of the project, with potential for critical feedback. Optional: Residents have the option for a one-week seminar with Travis Shaffer at the University of Missouri’s School of Visual Studies Riso Room to learn the basics of risography and refine their project. Project Specifics: All 2026 risograph resident projects will follow these parameters: Edition Size: 100 copies. Printing: Risograph ME9450 Duplicator (2 Drum). Ink colors: Black, Bright Red, Purple, White, Yellow, and Metallic Gold. Book trim size: 9” x 12” (max). Pages: 40 - 80 pages (20 – 40 sheets) on Mohawk Superfine 80T. Binding & Cover: Perfect binding; softcover with Foil-stamp. Artist Requirements: Donation: Artists must donate 40% of the edition produced during the residency to the Penumbra Foundation library (for educational use, promotion, and to support future residents). Expenses: Artists are responsible for all housing and transportation costs throughout the residency. Presentation: All 2026 Residents are expected to present their projects at a public group event in September 2026 at the Penumbra Foundation in NYC. How to Apply: Applications must include a written project proposal (projects must be photographic in nature), supporting images, mock-ups/PDFs relevant to the project's form as a book (15–30 images), a statement on why the project is suited to Risograph reproduction, and details of any prior print/book production experience (prior experience is not required).
