About
A 6-week residency in Dunedin for established Aotearoa New Zealand writers. Includes rent-free accommodation, a dedicated studio, and a $4,000 NZD stipend.
The Caselberg Trust and Dunedin UNESCO City of Literature are pleased to offer the Caselberg Trust Margaret Egan Cities of Literature Writers Residency. The aim of the residency is to provide writers an opportunity to work on a substantial piece of creative writing and to foster connections. There are no limits in terms of genre, language, or length of writing.
(Note: The residency alternates annually between international writers and Aotearoa New Zealand writers. The 2026 cycle is specifically for Aotearoa New Zealand writers).
Residency Details (October 2 – November 13, 2026)
Accommodation & Workspace: Rent-free accommodation for six weeks at the Caselberg House in Whakaohorahi Broad Bay on the Otago Peninsula (15 km from Dunedin). A separate, well-appointed artist’s workspace (the Charles Brasch Studio) is also provided on the property. (Note: The resident must cover power and heating costs; internet is free. No pets allowed). Stipend & Travel: Residents receive a stipend of $4,000 NZD ($3,500 paid on arrival, $500 held as a bond and paid upon final inspection). Reasonable travel costs within Aotearoa New Zealand to and from the residency are also covered.
Eligibility
Must be an established writer with at least one published work. Must be a citizen or permanent resident of Aotearoa New Zealand AND currently reside in Aotearoa New Zealand.
How to Apply
Applications and supporting documents must be submitted online in English via the Caselberg Trust website between March 3 and March 31, 2026. You will need to provide: A cover letter stating your postal address and outlining why you wish to apply. A CV or summary of your creative achievement in writing. The merits of the proposed work. A testimonial.
