About

International artist residency near Barcelona offering full and partial grants for visual and multidisciplinary artists, May–July 2027.

Can Serrat is a historic farmhouse residency programme based in El Bruc, at the foot of Montserrat mountain, 45 km from Barcelona. Since 1989, it has been one of Catalonia's longest-running international residency programmes for artists and writers.

This open call invites visual and multidisciplinary artists to apply for the Spring–Summer 2027 residency, running from 3 May to 30 July 2027. The programme supports individual and collective creative processes through studio visits, mentorship meetings, and a rich international community of up to 35 residents at a time.

Scholarship Options:

  • Full Grant – Includes six weeks' private accommodation (May–June 2027), two community dinners per week, basic food supplies, and a €2,000 artist fee (subject to public funding confirmation).
  • Partial Grants (20 available) – Minimum one month. Three options:
  • Shared room: €1,130/month
  • Private room: €1,745/month
  • Studio only (no accommodation): €305/month

All selected residents receive:

  • Full access to shared spaces and studio resources
  • Monthly unlimited public transport pass
  • Collective activities and community gatherings
  • Visibility through Can Serrat's channels and digital archive
  • Follow-up support meetings and studio visits with invited cultural professionals

Additional Grants:

After the residency, Can Serrat offers a Production Grant of €3,000 to support the development of one outstanding artistic process, and Retorns Grants — a return residency for one month in the following year — awarded in December 2027.

Selection Process:

The jury, comprising Norwegian painter Helle Kaarem and multidisciplinary artist Ely Daou, evaluates applications through aesthetic judgment and attention to the originality and displacement a project brings to current practice. This is not a checklist-based process — they're looking for genuine artistic thinking.

How to Apply:

Complete the online application form and upload a PDF (titled: lastnamefirstnameVA/M_SS2027Call) containing:

  • A video (max 3 minutes) or series of images showcasing your practice (embedded link)
  • Website link if applicable
  • Project proposal in Catalan, Spanish, or English

Can Serrat is supported by the Government of Catalonia and is a member of Xarxaprod and the TAV-CC network.
