About

International writing residency at a historic Catalan farmhouse near Barcelona, offering full and partial grants for writers from May–July 2027.

Can Serrat is one of the oldest international residency programmes for artistic and literary projects in Catalonia, housed in a farmhouse in El Bruc, just 45 km from Barcelona at the foot of Montserrat. Since 1989, the programme has supported writers and artists in developing their creative practice through individual and collective meetings, studio visits with invited professionals, and connections to a broad cultural network.

The Spring–Summer 2027 open call is now accepting applications from writers worldwide. The residency runs from 3 May to 30 July 2027, and the house can accommodate up to 35 people from different countries and disciplines — making for a genuinely international and cross-disciplinary environment.

Available grants:

  • Two-month Full Grant — private room for May and June 2027, two community dinners per week, and access to basic food supplies
  • One-month Full Grant — private room for July 2027, same meal inclusions
  • 30 Partial Grants — options include a shared room (€1,130/month), private room (€1,745/month), or studio-only access without accommodation (€305/month)

All selected residents receive access to shared spaces and resources, participation in collective activities, an unlimited monthly public transport pass, support meetings, studio visits with invited professionals, and publication in the residents' digital archive.

Additionally, Can Serrat offers a Retorns Grant — a return residency for one month in the following year — awarded in December 2027 to outstanding residents across the Spring, Summer, and Autumn cohorts.

Selection criteria are based on aesthetic and artistic judgement by the jury, with particular attention to the distinctive quality of each project and the fresh perspective it brings — especially regarding themes of nature and rurality, which are common in applications.

How to apply: Complete the online application form and upload a PDF titled 'lastnamefirstnameEscritura_SS2027Call' including a video (max 3 minutes) or text excerpts presenting your work, plus a website link if applicable. Applications may be submitted in Catalan, Spanish, or English.

Can Serrat is supported by the Government of Catalonia and is a member of Xarxaprod and the TAV-CC.
