About
A 12-month curatorial residency in Montreuil, France, for one emerging curator to develop a full exhibition cycle with production and publication support.
The Curatorial Residency 2027 at Maison Populaire is a prestigious 12-month programme based in Montreuil, France, inviting one emerging or early-career curator to conceive and deliver a full exhibition cycle within an established contemporary art institution.
The 2027 theme — *Déjouer les présents sans fin* (Disrupting Endless Presents) — invites research-driven curatorial thinking that critically engages with contemporary socio-political conditions. The selected curator will develop and present three exhibitions alongside public programming, editorial production, and community-facing mediation activities.
A distinctive feature of this residency is its dual structure: the curator is also responsible for selecting an artist to undertake a parallel digital creation residency, integrating artistic production directly into the curatorial framework.
Programme structure:
- Preparatory phase: July – December 2026
- Main residency: 4 January – 18 December 2027
Support includes:
- Curatorial fee of approximately €9,000 gross
- ~€50,000 production budget for exhibitions and programming
- €5,000 publication/catalogue budget
- €10,000 for the selected artist's digital residency (including €5,000 artist fee)
- Full institutional support across curatorial guidance, logistics, communications, and production
Application process:
- Phase I (deadline 12 April 2026): application form, curatorial proposal/note of intent (max. 5 pages), and CV
- Phase II (deadline 17 May 2026, by invitation): extended project dossier (15–20 pages), detailed exhibition concept, budget, artistic references, proposed artist for digital residency, and proof of professional status. Shortlisted candidates receive a €200 development fee.
- Interviews: 26–29 May 2026 (in-person only)
- Final selection announced: early June 2026
Eligibility: Open to national and international applicants who can demonstrate at least one prior curatorial experience and are able to reside in or access accommodation in the Île-de-France region throughout the programme.
This residency suits curators ready to step into institutional-scale exhibition making and build long-term professional networks across the contemporary art sector.
