About

Seven-month residency fellowships for emerging visual artists, fiction writers, and poets in Provincetown, Massachusetts.

The Fine Arts Work Center (FAWC) in Provincetown, Massachusetts offers 20 seven-month fellowships each year to emerging visual artists, fiction writers, and poets. Now in its sixth decade, FAWC is one of the world's most respected residency programmes — a place where artists live and work independently within a vibrant, supportive creative community.

Fellows receive a monthly stipend of $1,250 USD plus a $1,000 USD exit stipend, a modestly furnished apartment with private bathroom and kitchen, and (for visual artists) an approximately 400 sq ft private studio. During the residency, fellows pursue their own creative work, give public readings or solo exhibitions, and engage with a rotating roster of distinguished visiting artists and writers.

The programme runs from 1 October 2026 to 30 April 2027. Fellows are expected to remain in residence, with absences not exceeding 14 consecutive days or 30 days total across the seven months. Spouses and partners are welcome to accompany fellows, though partner workspaces are not provided.

Who can apply?

Emerging artists and writers aged 18 or older who are not enrolled in a degree programme during the fellowship year. Non-US citizens are welcome, but must arrange their own visa and provide a Social Security Number or ITIN if accepted.

  • Visual artists: Open to those without high-profile museum exhibitions, tenure-track professorships, or mid-career awards.
  • Writers: Those who have published (or are contracted to publish) a full-length book of creative work in any genre are not eligible. Applications must be submitted as either Fiction or Poetry (memoir and nonfiction are judged under Fiction). Writing samples must be strictly anonymous.

What to submit:

  • *Visual Arts:* Up to 10 images or 5 minutes of video of work made in the last four years, a CV/résumé, and a questionnaire. No artist statement or references required.
  • *Writing:* An anonymous writing sample with no identifying information.

Additional funding:

All applicants are automatically considered for the Rona Jaffe Foundation Fellowship, which fully funds the residency and includes a $2,500 USD travel and living prize for an emerging woman writer of exceptional promise (US permanent residents only). The Fellowship Access Fund offers grants of $500–$2,500 to support candidates with particular financial need in accepting their place.

Applications are submitted through FAWC's SlideRoom portal. Second-Year Fellowship applications open 3 March 2026, with a deadline of 3 April 2026. Notifications are sent in early May 2026.
