About

Annual open-call residency prize offering three artists a funded stay at Casa Wabi in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico in 2027.

Fundación Casa Wabi and ArtReview are inviting applications for their ninth annual open-call residency prize, offering three artists or collectives the opportunity to live and work at the stunning Casa Wabi in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico in 2027.

Fundación Casa Wabi is a non-profit organisation founded in 2014 by Mexican artist Bosco Sodi, with a mission of promoting social development and international cultural exchange through the arts. Its name draws on the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi — finding beauty and wisdom in simplicity, imperfection, and the transience of nature. The main facility was designed by renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando and sits on a 65-acre garden on Mexico's Pacific coast, about 30 minutes from Puerto Escondido airport. The grounds include two closed studios, six open studios, six private bungalows, a 450m² exhibition space, and a multipurpose room — as well as remarkable architectural works by Alberto Kalach, Álvaro Siza, Kengo Kuma, and others.

Residents are asked to produce one artwork reflecting their stay (in any format), which will enter the Fundación's permanent collection. They are also expected to undertake a community project, completed within their residency period. Beyond that, there are no productivity requirements — this is a genuine space to recharge, experiment, and connect.

The prize covers a local flight from Mexico City to Puerto Escondido, accommodation in a private bedroom with bathroom, three meals a day, studio access, and support for the community project. Artists are responsible for their own international travel to Mexico City.

Applications are open to all artists regardless of age, background, nationality, or career stage. Up to two artists may apply together as a collaborative pair. Winners will be chosen based on the quality of their work, alignment with Casa Wabi's ethos, and the potential of their proposed community project.

The deadline for applications is 14 June 2026. The three winners will be notified by 27 July 2026 and announced publicly on 31 July at casawabi.org and artreview.com.
