About
Six-month paid studio residency in Rockville, Maryland offering a private studio, $3,000 stipend, and solo exhibition for visual artists.
The Gibbs Street Resident Artists Programme 2026–2027 is a six-month studio residency offered by VisArts in Rockville, Maryland, open to professional artists and collaborative teams from around the world.
Residents receive a free 169-square-foot private studio, 24/7 access (outside scheduled events), a monthly stipend of $500 USD (totalling $3,000 over the six months), and a final solo exhibition in the VisArts gallery. The programme is designed to support the development of new bodies of work or the expansion of existing projects, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary, experimental, and community-engaged practice.
Two residency periods are available:
- Option 1: 24 June 2026 – 8 January 2027
- Option 2: 13 January 2027 – 18 June 2027
Residents are expected to maintain approximately 28 hours per week of studio presence and actively participate in public engagement activities such as talks, workshops, screenings, and open studio events. Monthly professional development sessions are also included.
Eligibility: Open to professional artists and collaborative teams aged 18 and over, working across all contemporary visual arts disciplines. Students and commercial artists are not eligible. International applicants are welcome, though visa support is not provided. Studios must not require specialised hazardous material ventilation.
To apply, you'll need:
- Up to 10 images of recent work (created within the last 4 years)
- Time-based media samples (up to 10 minutes total), if applicable
- CV or résumé
- Artist bio (max 200 words, third person)
- Artist statement (max 100 words)
- Residency proposal (max 250 words) covering artistic goals, community engagement, and resource use
- Two professional references
- Numbered list of works
- Optional: Vimeo or YouTube links for video work
Note: No housing is provided. Artists are responsible for their own materials, equipment, and insurance. Selection is made by a panel of artists and curators and is highly competitive.
