A three-month studio residency at Ara School of Art and Design in Canterbury, open to professional NZ artists.
The Grace Butler Memorial Foundation Residency offers a three-month studio placement at Ara School of Art and Design in Ōtautahi Christchurch, open to New Zealand citizens and permanent residents committed to a professional arts practice.
During the residency, you'll have full access to a dedicated studio space and be expected to engage with Ara students and staff — including presenting a public talk about your practice. The residency is designed to genuinely support and sustain your work, not just provide space.
At the close of the residency, you'll be expected to present your work publicly — through an exhibition, publication, or public arts project — within 12 months of finishing. You'll also gift one artwork made during or as a result of the residency to the permanent collection of Ara Institute of Canterbury, in consultation with their curator.
The successful applicant is selected by a panel of three — a prominent academic, curator, and practising artist — based on the quality of your work and how well your intentions align with the Trust Deed. Artists based outside Canterbury are responsible for their own travel and accommodation costs.
A non-refundable application fee of $25 (GST inclusive) is required, paid by direct credit before your application is processed.
