Flexible residencies for artists and researchers to engage with the Grainger Museum Collection and Archive, with a $5,000 AUD research grant.
The Grainger Museum at the University of Melbourne invites expressions of interest for its ongoing Creative and Research Residency Programme. Open to artists, researchers, and academics, the programme encourages creative, scholarly, and open-ended engagement with the Grainger Museum Collection and Archive.
Residencies are designed to be flexible — you might undertake one to two weeks of intensive collection work, or a sustained research engagement over up to a year. Proposals are accepted at any time and reviewed twice yearly, in April and September.
Each successful resident receives a $5,000 AUD research grant to support research time in the museum, access to the collection and archive, and development of research outputs. The University of Melbourne's Department of Museums and Collections provides additional in-kind support for outcomes such as installations, performances, or public events — including production and marketing assistance. Outcomes don't need to be delivered during the residency period itself.
The programme is particularly interested in proposals that explore:
Residents are also encouraged to engage with University of Melbourne students and/or participate in academic symposia.
To apply, submit a brief CV and a one-page proposal outlining the aim and scope of your residency, the intended focus areas of the collection and/or archive (with accession numbers if known), and your proposed dates and timeline. Email your application to grainger@unimelb.edu.au with 'Grainger Museum Residency Program application' in the subject line.
The museum warmly encourages potential applicants to get in touch before submitting to discuss their project idea.
