About

International ceramic arts residency in Medicine Hat, Canada, offering 1-month to year-long studio residencies with 24/7 facility access and mentorship.

The Medalta International Artists in Residence (MIAIR) programme invites ceramic artists from around the world to work within one of Canada's most historically significant clay production sites, now a thriving creative hub in Medicine Hat, Alberta.

Residencies come in several formats to suit different needs and career stages:

  • 1-month – short immersive residency
  • FLEX (2–8 months) – flexible duration for more sustained work
  • Year-Long (11 months) – deep engagement including a solo exhibition in the Yuill Family Gallery
  • Gwen Strojich Fellowship – fully funded (studio and lodging) plus a $1,000 CAD stipend

All residents receive 24/7 access to fully equipped studio spaces with semi-private workspaces, pottery wheels, shelves, and worktables, plus access to all kiln types and dedicated technical support. Mentorship is available from Medalta staff, visiting artists, and technicians. Up to 10 artists are hosted per month, with 30–40 residents welcomed across the year.

Optional on-site accommodation is available at the BMO Artist Lodge, offering a communal living environment alongside your fellow residents. The programme fosters connection through workshops, community education events, and a collaborative creative atmosphere.

While ceramics is central, the environment welcomes interdisciplinary and material-based practitioners whose work intersects with expanded visual arts or craft research.

To apply, you'll need:

  • Completed application form
  • Ten images of recent work (approx. 800px wide at 72dpi), with a separate document listing title, medium, dimensions, and year

  • Artist statement (max 100 words)
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Two references (name, email, and/or phone)
