New Zealand Film Commission (NZFC)
Rolling funded placements for NZ filmmakers to work with leading international film companies or shadow directors and producers on productions.
The NZFC International Placements Initiative supports New Zealand filmmakers to grow their skills and expand their global networks through two types of placements.
Company Placements offer the chance to work embedded within leading international film companies, gaining hands-on experience across development, financing, production, post-production, distribution, and marketing. Upcoming company placements include Studio Canal (likely Nov 2026 – June 2027), a London-based production company (Jan–June 2027), a Dublin-based production company (April–Sept 2027), an Auckland/Sydney-based distributor (2027), and a London-based sales company (2027).
Project-Based Placements allow filmmakers to shadow directors or producers on local and international productions filming in Aotearoa. Expressions of interest for these are accepted at any time through the NZFC application portal.
International Opportunities are also available through NZFC's partnerships, including the Asian Producers Network (25–30 October 2026, applications open 7 September 2026, deadline 21 September 2026), the Tri-Nations Indigenous Collaboration (Shared Ground, 2027), and a Rotterdam-based lab/workshop (January 2027).
Successful applicants receive a one-off grant of up to $60,000 NZD + GST to cover costs associated with their placement. Only one placement can be funded at a time.
To be eligible, you must have secured NZFC, NZ On Air, or Te Māngai Pāho development or production funding, or have been accepted into an intensive funded talent development initiative. Eligibility criteria vary for each specific opportunity — check the guidelines carefully before applying.
