About
A one-month writing residency at PICA in Perth for four early-career writers, responding to the 2026 Hatched graduate exhibition for publication in ARTERY Magaz
PICA and ARTERY Magazine are collaborating to offer a writers-in-residence programme during the 2026 Hatched: National Graduate Show. Four early-career writers will be selected for a month-long residency in Studio 0 at PICA, working in a shared studio space to develop new writing in response to works featured in the Hatched exhibition.
Selected residents will have their work published in issue #5 of ARTERY Magazine — an ekphrastic publication for emerging writers and artists based in Boorloo (Perth).
The residency is specifically designed for writers who may not yet have institutional affiliation, regular publishing platforms, or access to a dedicated writing space. It prioritises time, experimentation, and the development of a sustained writing practice, with guidance and support from both PICA and the ARTERY editorial team.
Studio Details
Studio 0 is approximately 38 square metres and includes large windows with natural light, rendered brick walls (4.2m high), polished jarrah floorboards, overhead LED lighting, and mobile heating and cooling. Furniture is provided. Please note the studio is accessible via stairs only, and sound from the adjacent Picabar may be audible during opening hours.
Eligibility
Open to early-career writers aged 18 and over. Interstate applicants are welcome, though PICA is unable to cover travel or accommodation costs.
Selection Criteria
Applications are assessed on the quality of existing work (published or unpublished), potential career impact, and how the residency will strengthen your practice and capacity. The selection panel includes ARTERY Magazine editors and PICA's Public Program & Studio Manager.
Access
PICA is committed to making its programmes as accessible as possible. Access requirements are voluntary to share, kept separate from assessment, and will not affect artistic consideration. To discuss access needs, contact Studios Manager Maile Bowen at maile@pica.org.au or (08) 9228 6304.
Residency Dates: 31 August – 27 September 2026
This residency is made possible with the support of PICA's Art Ambassadors.
