Sketch Proposal for Art at Sofiendalskolen – 2026 Public Art

Aalborg Municipality invites professional artists from any nationality to submit sketch proposals for site-specific public artworks as part of the renovation and extension of Sofiendalskolen, an elementary school in Aalborg, Denmark.

The project covers six key areas in the school's original building, where artworks will mark transitions between spaces and contribute to wayfinding, identity, and spatial coherence. Artists are encouraged to propose works that are durable, visually engaging, and suited to a school environment serving students in grades 3–7. Proposed works may stand alone or form part of a cohesive artistic narrative. Some areas require the incorporation of seating, while others may integrate historical artefacts or student participation.

What's on offer:

• Total municipal commission of DKK 450,000 + VAT for six installed artworks
• Three shortlisted artists each receive a DKK 25,000 honorarium to develop detailed proposals

• Application deadline: 20 April 2026
• Final draft submission (shortlisted): 15 June 2026
• Selection announcement: 24 June 2026

• Optional site visits: 26 March at 11:00 and 7 April at 10:00

Initial application requires:

• An idea sketch or concept drawing
• Explanation of intended materials
• Submitted as a PDF via Aalborg Municipality's application portal

Shortlisted artists will then be invited to submit a detailed proposal including an installation plan, material selection, budget overview, and cleaning and maintenance guidance.

The selection jury includes municipal representatives, school staff, and architectural consultants. Collaborative proposals involving architects, designers, or students are warmly welcomed.
