About

Tokyo Arts and Space (TOKAS) invites international creators to apply for a fully supported 3-month residency in Tokyo. The International Creator Residency Program 2027 is open to artists, designers, and architects based outside Japan who are eager to develop new work, conduct research, and connect with fellow creators in a vibrant creative environment.

Three residency periods are available:

  • Period 1: May – July 2027
  • Period 2: September – November 2027
  • Period 3: January – March 2028

Six creators will be selected in total (two per period). Applications from duos are welcome.

What TOKAS provides:

  • Private room at TOKAS Residency (25㎡ single; 49㎡ twin for duos), fully equipped with kitchen, bath, furniture, and linen
  • Access to shared studios (125㎡ and 48㎡) and communal spaces including library, laundry, and networking room
  • Return economy-class airfare between your nearest airport and Tokyo
  • Daily living allowance: JPY 4,200 per day
  • Project/work fee: JPY 300,000
  • Note: Japanese income tax (20.42%) is deducted from financial support. For duos, living expenses and project fees are provided for one person; airfare is covered for both.

Eligibility:

  • Must reside outside Japan at time of application
  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in visual arts, design, or architecture
  • Strong English communication skills
  • Self-sufficient and able to work and live independently
  • Students are ineligible (PhD candidates excepted)

During your residency, you'll be expected to develop and present new work at TOKAS's OPEN STUDIO event, submit a project report, and participate in TOKAS programmes as requested.

To apply, submit via the Online Submission Form by 18:00 JST on 16 June 2026. Your application must include:

1. Completed Application Form (PDF, filled using Adobe Reader)

2. Two letters of recommendation from arts/cultural professionals

3. Portfolio (max 6 A4 landscape pages, max 10MB, up to 3 projects)

Results will be announced via the TOKAS website by early October 2026.
