About
A fully funded residency on a historic Wyoming ranch offering 2–6 weeks of uninterrupted studio time, accommodation, and meals for working artists.
The Ucross Residency Program (Spring 2027 Session) offers working artists an extraordinary opportunity to focus entirely on their creative practice, situated on a breathtaking 20,000-acre historic ranch in the High Plains of northern Wyoming.
The residency provides uninterrupted time, a private studio, and comfortable living accommodation at no cost to the artist. Up to ten residents are in residence at any one time, with individual stays ranging from two to six weeks. Around 115 artists are supported each year across all sessions.
Professionally prepared lunches and dinners are served Monday through Friday by a resident chef, with provisions available for breakfasts and weekends. Private bedrooms, individual studio spaces, housekeeping, and wireless internet are all included.
Who can apply?
The programme is open to visual artists, writers, composers, choreographers, performance artists, and interdisciplinary practitioners at any professional career stage — both emerging and established artists are warmly encouraged to apply. Collaborative teams of up to three members may also apply together.
Please note: Ucross does not accept applications from students at any level. Past residents must wait three years before reapplying (you may apply after two and a half years). Spouses, partners, or family members cannot accompany residents, though two artists in a relationship may each apply independently for concurrent residencies.
Application requirements:
Applicants submit a project proposal, references, and work samples formatted strictly according to discipline guidelines:
- *Visual Art:* Exactly 10 images at 300 dpi in JPG or TIF format (no PDFs); include a data sheet with title, medium, size, and year.
- *Dance, Performance & Video:* 1–3 video files (max 8 mins/200MB each) or up to 3 Vimeo/YouTube links.
- *Music/Sound:* 3–5 audio files (max 8 mins/200MB each) or up to 3 Vimeo links.
- *Fiction, Nonfiction, Playwriting:* In English, double-spaced, max 20 pages, with full name included.
- *Poetry:* 6–10 poems (max 15 pages) in a single PDF, with each new poem beginning on a hard page break.
The application fee is $40 USD. No fee waivers are available for the General Studio Residency. Note that separate Fellowships for Native American Visual Artists and Writers carry no application fee.
Residents are responsible for their own travel to Sheridan, Wyoming, and for supplying their own working materials.
Applications open 1 May 2026 via the Ucross Submittable portal. The deadline is 15 July 2026 at 11:59 PM MT. Notifications are sent approximately 16 weeks after the deadline. The Spring 2027 Session runs from February through early June 2027.
