About

Varuna offers week-long to month-long residential fellowships for writers across all genres at Australia's only national literature residency. Residents receive private studio space, meals and mentorship.

The Varuna Residential Fellowships offer 28 writers a chance to escape the noise of daily life and enter a space entirely dedicated to the craft of writing. Located in the former home of Eleanor and Eric Dark in the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains, Varuna is Australia's only national writers' house. A fellowship at Varuna is a badge of honor in a writer's CV. It provides a two-week residency including full board, a private studio, and a community of peers. Most importantly, it includes a one-on-one consultation with a professional mentor to help refine your manuscript or project. Whether you are an emerging voice or an established author, this residency is designed to provide the physical and mental space required for "Deep Work." Key Details: The Prize: Two-week residency + private studio + all meals provided. Professional Development: A one-hour session with a Varuna consultant to discuss your work-in-progress. Eligibility: Australian citizens or permanent residents (18+). Open to all genres, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and screenwriting. Diversity Streams: Includes dedicated spots for the Jerra Studio Fellowship (writers with disability), First Nations Fellowships, and Regional Writers. The Cost: $70 application fee (waived for specific fellowship streams).
