About

A 12-week visual arts residency in Invercargill, culminating in a public exhibition and a gifted work to the SAF Collection.

The Southland Art Foundation invites visual artists to express their interest in the 2026 William Hodges Fellowship Residency — a 12-week immersive residency based in Invercargill, Murihiku Southland.

This is a rare opportunity to live and work in the deep south, engaging with the landscapes, communities, and character of Southland while developing a new body of work. The residency concludes with a public exhibition, and 1–2 works created during the residency will be gifted to the SAF Collection.

The residency is expected to begin in late August or early September 2026. Artists are asked to consider their studio space requirements (ventilation, water access, floor space, power, etc.) as part of their expression of interest.

How to apply:

Complete the Expression of Interest form, including

  • Confirmation of availability for the 12-week period
  • A description of your medium and typical scale of work
  • Your studio working space requirements
  • A brief proposal outline (max. 500 words)
  • Three high-quality images of recent works (JPG or PDF) with captions including title, medium, and date

Email your completed EOI and supporting materials to safresidency@gmail.com with the subject line: *William Hodges Fellowship EOI 2026*

Timeline:

  • EOI close: 20 May 2026, 5pm (late entries cannot be accepted)
  • Shortlisted artists invited to submit full proposals: by 3 June 2026
  • Full proposal deadline: 17 June 2026
