About

Month-long Miami residency for women and non-binary lens-based artists, with $2,500 stipend and round-trip airfare provided.

The WOPHA Artist-in-Residence programme is a month-long residency held in September 2026 at El Espacio 23, a stunning 28,000-square-foot converted warehouse in Miami's Allapattah neighbourhood. Founded in 2020, the programme is dedicated to supporting women and non-binary artists working in photography and lens-based practice.

Residents receive a $2,500 USD stipend to cover materials, local transport, and meals, as well as round-trip airfare. Accommodation is provided within El Espacio 23's residency apartments, each with a private kitchen, laundry, and bathroom, plus access to a shared studio workspace.

The residency is designed for independent, self-directed creative work — whether developing a new project, continuing ongoing research, or experimenting with new approaches. Artists are encouraged to engage with Miami's cultural community, meeting curators, collectors, and fellow creatives throughout their stay.

For the 2026 round, WOPHA will select one artist from Brazil through a special partnership with Instituto Moreira Salles, supported by The55Project Art Foundation. All applicants are considered through the same process — no separate application is needed.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Identify as a woman or non-binary artist
  • Primarily work in photography or visual culture (including camera-less, computational, archival, or image-based practices)
  • At least 25 years old by the application deadline
  • Minimum five years of professional artistic practice
  • Not currently enrolled in a degree programme
  • Available for the full month of September 2026
  • Non-local (travelling, out-of-state, or international applicant)
  • Able to commit at least 30 hours per week to studio work
  • Able to travel to the US (international applicants are responsible for their own visa arrangements)
  • Proficient in English
  • Previous WOPHA residents are not eligible to reapply

This is a wonderful opportunity for established and mid-career lens-based artists to step out of their everyday environment, focus deeply on their practice, and build meaningful connections in one of the US's most vibrant art cities.
