CIRCUIT Artist Moving Image
A collaborative wānanga for 3 Pōneke-based Indigenous artists exploring land and water through moving image, with a $1,000 commission per artist.
CIRCUIT, in collaboration with Native Land Digital, invites artists based in Pōneke / Te Whanganui-a-Tara to apply for Wā kāinga — a collaborative wānanga exploring relationships with land and water through artist moving image.
The programme is conceived and led by Tanya Te Miringa Te Rorarangi Ruka (Ngā Puhi, Ngati Pakau and Waitaha), CIRCUIT's Kaitiaki Kiriata and Executive Director of Native Land Digital.
Over six fortnightly sessions across 12 weeks, a close cohort of 3 selected artists will come together at CIRCUIT's offices (Level 2, 27 Dixon St, Wellington) for shared readings, screenings, and kōrero. Sessions will explore place, language, ecological knowledge, and how landscapes hold memory and meaning — and how these ideas are expressed through moving image practice.
Each selected artist will receive a $1,000 grant to produce a new short moving image work responding to the theme of Relationships with Land and Water. Completed works will screen at CIRCUIT in December 2026 alongside artists from North America and Australia exploring similar themes, before touring through CIRCUIT and Native Land Digital networks.
As part of the programme, three Indigenous artists from around the world will join selected sessions via Zoom to share their perspectives and practice.
Participation is free. Sessions will run approximately two hours each, scheduled in evenings or weekends at times agreed by the group. All participants are expected to attend all six sessions.
All Wellington-based artists are welcome to apply, though Indigenous artists are particularly encouraged.
