About

Present a completed performance work at the inaugural Alentejo Contemporary Art Biennial in Arraiolos, Portugal, with €2,000 in fees and full travel support.

Hypertextile 2027 is the first Alentejo Contemporary Art Biennial, taking place in Arraiolos, Portugal — a town renowned for its centuries-old textile traditions. The biennial is an official project of Évora_27 European Capital of Culture and uses textiles as a curatorial lens to explore territory, place, memory, labour, identity, and community.

This open call invites artists and collectives from anywhere in the world to submit completed performance projects for presentation as part of Hypertextile 2027. Two projects will be selected for public presentation between May and July 2027.

What's on offer:

  • €1,500 artist fee
  • €500 production grant
  • Accommodation during the presentation period
  • Workspace and access to available equipment
  • Round-trip national or international transportation
  • Inclusion in the Hypertextile website, catalogue, documentary, and communication materials

Who should apply:

This call is best suited to artists and collectives with a finished performance project that has already had public presentation experience. The jury is looking for work that demonstrates artistic maturity, conceptual clarity, technical feasibility, and the capacity to engage with the biennial's core theme of *topophilia* — the affective bond between people and place (as developed by geographer Yi-Fu Tuan). Works that explore social, political, emotional, ecological, or sensory connections to place, territory, or community will align strongly with the curatorial framework.

Applicants must be 18 or older. The call is open to any disciplinary field working through performance.

Key dates:

  • Application deadline: 3 July 2026, 11:59 PM (Mainland Portugal Time)
  • Interviews with pre-selected applicants: 6–10 July 2026
  • Selected artists announced: 13 July 2026
  • Public presentations: May–July 2027

Apply via the official Cortex Frontal website: https://www.cortexfrontal.org/performance
