Te Tuhi Curatorial Internship at Parnell Station Gallery

Te Tuhi is looking for an emerging curator to take on an 18-month paid internship at Parnell Station Gallery — a dedicated art project space within the historic Parnell Train Station in inner Auckland.

This is a rare opportunity to develop and run your own independent gallery programme, with the full backing of one of Aotearoa's leading contemporary art institutions. The internship runs from 1 January 2027 to 30 June 2028, and includes a three-month research period followed by a 15-month presentation period.

During the research phase, you'll work closely with Te Tuhi's curatorial team to develop your programme strategy. From there, you'll have genuine curatorial autonomy — programming approximately eight projects and working with around 16 artists across solo and group exhibitions, talks, events, digital content, publications, and performance.

You'll be based primarily at Te Tuhi's Pakuranga home, with time at Parnell Station Gallery for exhibitions and events. Throughout the internship, you'll receive hands-on mentorship from Te Tuhi's experienced team across exhibition planning and design, curatorial practice, budget and project management, and marketing and communications.

The role is full-time at 32 hours per week (Te Tuhi operates a four-day working week), with a salary of $49,920 NZD per annum and a dedicated exhibition budget of $32,000 NZD over the 18 months.

Ideal candidates will hold a degree (and have been out of formal education for at least 12 months), have a strong understanding of contemporary visual art and curatorial practice, and be able to work collaboratively and manage projects independently. Experience in events, writing, marketing, or exhibition installation is desirable but not essential.

Previous interns have gone on to roles at The Physics Room, Artspace, and Blue Oyster Artspace — this internship has a strong track record of launching curatorial careers.
