Artist Feature 006: Mariana du Plessis. Kirikiriroa-based painter, photographer, and lumen printer, Mariana is the third Wintec practitioner to feature on Patronage. Her practice treats each medium as a distinct method of communication for the same broader concerns: identity, memory, and the distance between observed landscape and felt experience. She paints places that do not exist, pulled from memory and fantasy rather than reference, and her recent lumen prints record time, light, people, and environment without narrating any of them. We discussed mediums as languages, the moment landscape becomes material, self-doubt as evidence, and why art education promises completion but the learning never truly ends.
