Annual national art competition and curated exhibition in Whanganui discovering New Zealand's next wave of contemporary artists.
New Tides is an annual national art competition and professionally curated exhibition created by Art by the River, an independent contemporary gallery in Whanganui. It's open to artists at all career stages, celebrating fresh ideas and distinctive creative voices from across Aotearoa New Zealand.
Selected finalists are invited to exhibit their work at Art by the River, placing it before collectors, curators, fellow artists and the wider public during a month-long exhibition running 21 November to 13 December 2026.
Awards
Art by the River Award – $2,500 NZD
Presented to an emerging, early-career or transitioning artist in recognition of outstanding work and a distinctive creative voice. Alongside the cash prize, the recipient receives a professional development opportunity — which may include gallery representation, a solo exhibition, or another opportunity the gallery considers appropriate.
Audience Award – $1,000 NZD
Voted for by visitors to the exhibition and open to every selected finalist, regardless of career stage.
How to Enter
Download and complete the Entry Form from the New Tides website, then submit your artwork images by email. Eligible entries are assessed anonymously by an independent Selection Panel, and selected finalists are notified before the exhibition opens.
