About

Five early-career artists present work in a live crit format at Artspace Aotearoa, with public feedback sessions over the exhibition's run.

As part of the exhibition CRIT: Art learning since 1987, Artspace Aotearoa is looking for five early-career artists to take part in a series of live crit sessions held within the gallery space.

The exhibition explores models of alternative art education since 1987 through case studies, artworks, and discursive programmes. The crit sessions extend this kaupapa into live, participatory territory — each selected artist will have their work displayed in the gallery for two weeks, followed by a critical feedback session hosted by Artspace Aotearoa staff, open to the artist's support network and the general public.

Presentation resources available include two walls, a plinth, and a flatscreen.

Who can apply?

Any artist currently enrolled in a tertiary programme, or who has graduated within the last five years, is welcome to apply. Early-career artists without formal tertiary training are also encouraged to express interest. Applicants should be comfortable with open, public discussion of their work in a gallery setting.

How to apply:

Submit a 200-word statement about a recent artwork you'd like feedback on, the kind of feedback you're interested in, and three images to emily@artspace.org.nz by Sunday 14 June. Applications can be submitted as a one-page PDF, or as a video or audio recording of under three minutes.

The crit sessions run from Saturday 18 July to Saturday 26 September 2026 at Artspace Aotearoa, 292 Karangahape Road, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.
