Better Go South
A 2–3 month paid artist residency in Stuttgart, living in a rooftop tiny house artwork with studio space and a final gallery exhibition.
Better Go South, a contemporary art gallery with spaces in Berlin and Stuttgart, is offering two residency slots in Stuttgart from 2027. Open to international, non-German-based artists, the residency runs for 2–3 months and includes accommodation in Richard Woods' iconic inhabitable tiny house artwork — a fully equipped 20 m² living space on the gallery rooftop with a private terrace, garden, skylight, and complete privacy.
Residents also have access to a dedicated 20–30 m² atelier, materials support of up to €1,000, and the full use of the gallery's 200 m² exhibition space to present a final solo show. The gallery handles all PR, social media, event organisation, and production of catalogs and invitations.
Applications are reviewed by a jury of respected figures from the German contemporary art world, including the Head of the Mercedes-Benz Art Collection, the director of Villa Merkel, and the founder of Corina Contemporary.
Available slots:
What the gallery receives in return: One pre-agreed artwork for the Preuss Collection, and a 50% gallery share on all sales during the exhibition.
To apply, send a single PDF to the gallery email with the subject line indicating your preferred slot. The PDF must include: proposed exhibition concept, artist statement, artist portrait, recent artworks (with medium, dimensions, and retail prices), previous exhibition list, and full contact details.
Shortlisted artists will be contacted for further discussions, video calls, or studio visits. Selected residents will be announced at the end of November 2026.
Stuttgart is home to the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, the Mercedes-Benz Art Collection, and the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste, with easy connections to Munich and Paris — offering a culturally rich yet relaxed environment to develop new work.
