Camargo Fellowship – Residencies 2027–2028

The Camargo Fellowship offers 10-week research-based residencies at the Camargo Foundation in Cassis, France — a contemplative campus on the edge of the Mediterranean Sea. Founded by American artist and philanthropist Jerome Hill in 1971, the Foundation has supported over 1,500 individuals across the arts and humanities.

This is the last open public call for the Camargo Fellowship. From July 2027, the Foundation will move to a new selection process no longer based on a public open call. If you are considering applying for a residency in Fall 2027 or Spring 2028, now is the time.

Residency periods:

• Fall 2027: 8 September – 17 November 2027
• Spring 2028: 23 February – 4 May 2028

Who can apply?

Applications are welcome from three main categories

• Scholars – those with a PhD and post-doctoral record, or PhD candidates in final stages, with a focus on French, Francophone, or Mediterranean cultures and cross-cultural studies.
• Thinkers – accomplished professionals in cultural and creative fields (curators, journalists, critics, urban planners, independent scholars, etc.) engaged in critical thought attuned to the arts and society.
• Artists – across visual arts, choreography, theatre direction, performance, writing and playwriting, film/video/digital, composition, sound, and multidisciplinary practice. Artists must have maintained a professional practice for at least five years, with a demonstrated track record of exhibitions, performances, publications, or awards.

Collaborative teams of up to three individuals are also eligible, with stipends and travel grants awarded to each member. Professional translators may apply under the category that best suits their project.

What's provided:

• A stipend of EUR 350 per week (EUR 3,500 total)
• Travel funding (economy class) to and from Cassis
• A furnished apartment on campus
• Access to a reference library, music/conference room, open-air theatre, artist's studio with darkroom, and a composer's studio with piano

The Foundation does not provide art supplies, technical equipment, dance studio facilities, or shipping of artworks. Fellows must be physically in residence for the full 10 weeks, with absences limited to weekends.

Each fellow is expected to conceive and lead a residents' session — an interactive gathering that invites the cohort into their research or practice. Open studios take place twice yearly, and while participation isn't mandatory, fellows are encouraged to share work in progress with the public.

Work may be in any language, but applicants must be able to communicate well in English. Basic French is helpful for life outside campus.
