About

International residency at a Japanese performing arts centre offering free studio, hall, and accommodation for 7 days to 3 months.

Kinosaki International Arts Center (KIAC) in Hyogo, Japan, is inviting applications for its Artist-In-Residence Programme for the fiscal year 2027/2028 (1 April 2027 – 31 March 2028, excluding September 2027).

KIAC is a creation-focused art centre for the performing arts and contemporary artistic practice. It's not a venue for polished, finished work — it's a place for experimentation, research, and genuine exchange between resident artists and the local community. Think of it as a laboratory where new artistic possibilities can emerge.

For this open call, KIAC has expanded its eligible genres to include research-based art projects alongside performing arts, reflecting the centre's longstanding affinity for artists who engage in process-led and community-embedded practice.

Eligible projects include:

  • Performing arts (theatre, dance, music, performance, etc.)
  • Research-based art projects
  • Study groups, symposiums, and lectures by art professionals

Residencies focused on research or work-in-progress are explicitly welcome — there is no requirement to present a finished work.

What KIAC provides:

  • Free use of the centre's hall and studios
  • Free accommodation for up to 7 rooms
  • Support from technical staff and coordinators

Artists cover their own travel, living expenses, and production costs. A utility contribution of ¥350 per person per day is payable to Toyooka City.

Residency length: Minimum 7 days, maximum 3 months.

Applicants must be able to communicate in basic Japanese or English (or arrange their own interpreter). Artists are also expected to participate in KIAC's Community Exchange Programme — sharing their process with locals and visitors through open studios, talks, workshops, or informal presentations.

To apply: Download the application form from the KIAC website, complete it, and email it to air2027@kiac.jp with the subject line "Application for the 2026 AIR program" by 17:00 JST on Saturday 27 June 2026.

Results will be notified by the end of October 2026.
