MADA Gallery at Monash University's Caulfield Campus in Melbourne is inviting applications for its year-long 2027 Curator-in-Residence programme. The successful applicant — or applicant team — will develop and deliver two curated exhibitions across the year, building on one another to form a cohesive programme.
The residency comes with a total annual exhibition budget of $18,000 AUD and a curator fee of $6,000 AUD (plus superannuation), with flexibility in how these funds are distributed across the two exhibitions. Curators may also apply for additional grants or fundraising to supplement the budget.
Applications are open to anyone — Australian or international, independent practitioners or Monash academic staff, current students, and alumni. MADA Gallery is particularly interested in proposals that are speculative, propositional, and experimental, and that engage students, connect to urgent contemporary issues, or explore the relationship between exhibition-making, teaching, and research. Proposals that connect to Monash University's key priorities — Climate Change, Geopolitical Security, and Wellness — and/or the Faculty's research areas in art, design, and architecture are especially encouraged. Alternative programme structures may also be considered.
Support provided includes installation assistance, access to MADA Gallery's 9 x 14 m space with full AV equipment, potential loans from the Monash University Collection of Art (managed by MUMA), gallery assistants, student volunteer invigilators, digital invitations, social media promotion, professional documentation, event opening costs, and listings in Art Almanac and Art Gallery Guide.
To apply, submit a single PDF by email to mada.gallery@monash.edu by 20 August 2026. The PDF should include: a project summary (up to 3 x A4 pages) with rationale for each exhibition and how they connect, a brief CV, artist/practitioner lists and proposed works, installation plans, an explanation of audience engagement and connection to the tertiary education context, up to 10 captioned images or media links, and a draft budget. Results will be announced in October 2026.
