The Residency at Casa Gràcia

The Residency at Casa Gràcia is a self-directed artist residency set in the historic Mediterranean city of Mahon on the island of Menorca, Spain. Founded by artists Rashid Johnson and Sheree Hovsepian and supported by Hauser & Wirth Menorca, the programme offers five residencies each year — three for visual artists (stays of up to three months) and two for writers (stays of up to six months).

Residencies are designed to give artists dedicated, pressure-free time for sustained independent work. There is no requirement to produce a final exhibition or public outcome — the focus is on creative development, experimentation, and reflection. Residents are encouraged to engage meaningfully with the local community and cultural life of the island, though this is not obligatory.

Visual artists receive access to a ground-level studio with soaring ceilings, abundant natural light, plumbing, and easy material delivery access. All residents are accommodated at Casa Gràcia itself — a beautifully appointed private home in the heart of Mahon, steps from markets, restaurants, and cultural centres. Accommodation includes a large private bedroom, ensuite bathroom, and shared kitchen and living spaces. All utilities and a weekly cleaning service are included.

Eligible residents may receive a stipend of €8,500 to assist with travel, living expenses, materials, and shipping costs. All residents also receive administrative and logistical support from the Hauser & Wirth Menorca team, as well as a 25% discount at Cantina restaurant at the art centre (available May–October).

This residency is open to artists currently based outside Spain (a separate slot exists for Spain-based artists). Applicants should have at least five years of sustained professional practice. Applications from duos or collectives are considered, and accommodation for partners, children, or studio assistants may be discussed.

Shortlisted applicants may be invited to an online conversation before final selection. Unsuccessful applicants are welcome to reapply in future rounds.
