Art prizes come in several forms. Acquisition prizes buy the winning work outright for a public collection, which places your work permanently alongside the institution's holdings. Non-acquisitive prizes award cash and return the work to you. Career awards and fellowships recognise a body of work rather than a single piece, and often carry the largest sums.
Most prizes run on an annual cycle with a fixed entry window, a shortlist announced some weeks later, and a finalists' exhibition where the winner is named. Being shortlisted is itself a credential worth listing on a CV, and the finalists' exhibition frequently produces sales and gallery interest independent of the prize itself.
Entry fees are more common with prizes than with other opportunity types, typically sitting between $25 and $100, and usually fund the prize pool and exhibition costs. Check whether the fee is per entry or per artist, and whether shortlisted work must be delivered at your own expense — freight to and from the host institution is a real cost that catches people out.
Read the eligibility conditions closely. Prizes are the most heavily conditioned opportunity type, with restrictions on medium, dimensions, date of making, subject matter, and the artist's age, residency, or career stage.
