Whakatāne Art Gallery at Te Kōputu a te Whanga a Toi is now accepting exhibition proposals for its 2028 programme. This is an open invitation to individual artists, collaborative practitioners, collectives, curators, groups and organisations — emerging and established — to pitch their ideas for a contemporary art exhibition.
The gallery is interested in diverse, engaging and thought-provoking exhibitions that support artistic practice, explore ideas, and create meaningful connections between artists and audiences. Proposals with relevance to Whakatāne, the wider rohe and local communities are particularly welcomed, though not required.
Your proposal can be at any stage of development — it doesn't need to be fully finalised. The gallery encourages you to share enough information for their team to understand your concept and how it might be presented. This could include:
Proposals are assessed in the context of the gallery's overall exhibition programme. Successful applicants will be notified by the end of February 2027.
To apply, complete the online Exhibition Proposal Form via the gallery's website.
